The Langkawi International Conventional Centre (or LICC) is Langkawi’s latest addition in the island’s drive for a new wave of tourism boom, particularly in the business, meetings and convention industry.

Fresh from hosting the 26th ASEAN Summit in April 2015 – one of the first major events at the newly launched state-of-the-art Langkawi International Convention Centre – this mystical island is showcasing its fabled history and natural wonders to an international audience.

With Langkawi International Convention Centre, Langkawi now boast of conference facilities and necessary infrastructures of international standards, hence placing the island into a list of other international hubs for events and conventions. Langkawi is also set to enhance its standing as a luxury travel destination with the opening of The St. Regis Langkawi later this year.

Centrally located close to Kuah town – the island’s shopping and commercial centre – and approximately a 20-minute drive from Langkawi International Airport, the Langkawi International Convention Centre can further leverage on its strategic location with The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa as its’ neighbour.

Michael Schlueter, Managing Director of the three establishments (Langkawi International Convention Centre, The Westin Langkawi and The St. Regis Langkawi), said that with the positioning of promoting Langkawi as a destination for the luxury market, the LICC’s state-of-the-art facilities make it fitting to host world class conventions such as the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN Regional Workshop.

“Some of the special features include high end audio visual facilities such as Bose sound systems in all rooms, high ceiling measuring at nine meters with mounted chandeliers to exclude an ornate ambience, a 93 sq metres VIP Suite, VIP holding room, lots of natural day light at the foyer areas and all function rooms being pillar-less.” said Mr Schlueter.

He added that the Grand Ballroom with a capacity of 1000 persons at 1660 sq metres, can be divided into three rooms. There are seven additional meeting rooms ranging from 21 sq metres to 1660 sq metres, making it an ideal venue for International conferences, product launches, fashion shows and other niche functions.

Design of the convention centre was inspired by a traditional Malaysian design: a motif that reflects the Malay culture. To ease private arrivals for the VIPs, there are three different entrances that provide exclusively for politicians, royalties or even high profile celebrities.

Following world class events such as LIMA and the ASEAN Summit, the Langkawi International Convention Centre anticipates more events from International companies and is confirmed for 10 more events until year end.

“We are confident that the Langkawi International Convention Centre will set new standards in Langkawi for more high-end events. Especially with the development plans by the government to elevate Langkawi as a world class destination, the LICC will play a pivotal role in supporting a platform for hospitality services for events on the island”, continues Mr Schlueter.
