As one of the most exciting events in Thailand’s yachting calendar, the Thailand International Boat Show (TIBS) took place at the Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket, and proved to be a spectacular gathering of the finest yachts, luxury brands, and boating enthusiasts.

The Prime Minister of Thailand, Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, officially opened the third edition of TIBS. Dignitaries and distinguished guests from central and local government attended the opening ceremony, recognising the importance of the Jan 9-12 January 2025 show as an economic driver for luxury tourism and a platform to showcase Thailand’s soft power while supporting the sustainable growth of Thailand’s marine industry.

Helping to oversee the Prime Minister’s visit to TIBS was Asia Pacific Superyachts co-founder and Thai Yachting Business Association board member, Tanyuta (Jojo) Singhmanee. While assisting in overseeing the PM’s visit, they discussed Thailand’s marine industry needs in attracting more superyachts, specifically discussing the key issues of the Thailand Superyacht Charter License and Visas for Crew.

The Thailand Superyacht Charter License recently introduced represents a major change in the maritime and tourist industries of the nation and establishes Phuket as a top charter boat destination. This regulatory change removes a major obstacle that had previously discouraged many yacht owners and charter operators: the requirement that foreign-flagged superyachts over 30 meters can now legally operate charters in Thai waters without paying a 7% VAT on the yacht’s value.

Encouraging more superyachts to arrive and remain for extended periods of time, the new Charter License furthers the importance of extending Crew Visas was addressed, as currently visiting crew receive a 30-day Visa; superyacht service agencies and others in the marine industry have been working to change regulations to 90-day or 180-day crew visas.

“Thailand can boost superyacht tourism by revising charter laws and redefining yacht size and insurance policies to align with international standards along with crew visa change”, reports fellow APS co-founder in Phuket and Thailand Yachting Conference Panelist, Gordon Fernandes. Taking place the day before the show, the conference welcomed 150 delegates and expert speakers from across Asia-Pacific and together with the show created a 360-degree B2B2C platform that connects industry stakeholders and showcases Thailand’s marine leisure industry to the world.

The Thailand International Boat Show (TIBS) has become one of Southeast Asia’s premier events for marine enthusiasts, showcasing the latest in luxury yachts, watercraft, and marine innovations. The event, held at the prestigious Phuket Yacht Haven, recorded a phenomenal 62% increase in total visitors compared to the previous year and included a 74% rise in foreign attendees and a 54% boost in Thai visitors, solidifying TIBS as a must-visit event for marine aficionados.
